YouTube makes changes to Dislikes

YouTube announces that changes will be made to the "dislike" option below the videos. Indeed, the platform has decided to no longer display the number of Dislikes. The goal: to protect creators who are sometimes victims of harassment, by discouraging Internet users from using this option for the simple purpose of seeing this figure increase. YouTube says it carried out a test to determine what would be most effective for users.

In this test, viewers could still see the button and click on it, but the "dislike" count was not displayed. This has allowed us to see a decrease in the number of users clicking on "I don't like" for the simple purpose of attacking creators. According to our test and the testimonials we gathered directly from small designers (beginners or experienced), small chains are more targeted.

Based on the results of this test, YouTube has decided not to remove the feature, but rather to continue in this direction by making "Dislikes" private. An idea that the social network had already mentioned a few months ago. The platform announces that this change is taking place today and will see a gradual deployment.

What impact for users ?

On the creator side, the "Dislikes" count will still be available in YouTube Studio, alongside the usual performance metrics. On the viewer side, they will still be able to use this button, in particular to personalize their recommendations on the platform or to give their opinion on a content creator's video, without it being public.

YouTube also explains that, during the test, some Internet users explained that the number of Dislikes was decisive in deciding whether they were watching a video. This criterion can therefore no longer be taken into account by users as a guarantee of quality or not of content.
